Get your car Winter ready

Cold Check – Four ways cold can damage your car

Posted on Oct 28, 2015 at 12:15 PM

Your car can sometimes be more susceptible to the cold than you are. Cars are sensitive to the cold weather and dropping temperatures can have adverse effects on your vehicle.

4 Things to watch out for this winter

Your car battery can die from the Cold!

  • Make sure to have your car battery regularly tested. Ideally do this before the cold snap arrives. The reason the cold affects the car’s battery is that extreme cold pulls voltage from a battery thus making it hard for your car to start.
  • Make sure to also check all your car fluids during a cold spell.

Check list:

  • Oil
  • Antifreeze
  • Power Steering
  • Brake and transmission fluids

Typically the cold causes fluids to thicken which make it harder for your car to get the fluid it needs to run properly. Transmission fluid in particular needs to flow quickly and can cause a car to stop if it flows slowly.

  • Wipers and Washer solvent may fail

It is important to clean the windshield of your car before turning on your wipers. Many wiper problems are caused by windshields not being cleared first and then being turned on. Wiper blades can get torn because extreme weather damages them. They are made of rubber and pressure from snow, ice and slush will break them.

It is also a good idea to set the heater and fan controls on defrost and high before you turn the ignition off at night as this reduces the risk of breaking switches in very low temperatures the following morning.

  • Spark Plug Reliability weakens during Winter.

A damaged spark plug, ignition component or clogged filter may cause your vehicle not to start. As temperatures plummet it will be harder to start the engine so a bad plug will affect reliability. Make sure to keep a check on this during the cold months.

Planning in advance and being aware of these common Winter problems can help you be car ready this Winter.
