Essential tips in the Event of a breakdown.

1. In the event of a breakdown, get your car off the road.

In the event of a breakdown drivers need to ensure their vehicle is well in off the road so that you are not causing an obstruction to other vehicles. The driver should also put on their hazard warning lights. If the vehicle breaks down on the motorway pull in as far as you can, alerting traffic behind you with hazard lights. The driver should leave their vehicle, get behind the barrier and call the Gardaí, on their mobile phone or roadside telephone.

2. Let other drivers know that you're in trouble.

Hazard lights are a start, but they don't necessarily mean that you're having car problems. For example, you might have pulled over to take a call. If you can get out of the car safely and if you have road flares available, place a couple of them about 50 feet behind your car. Raising the bonnet of your car is a good idea as it alerts people to the fact that you need assistance.

3. Stay with your car.

It's usually best if you stay with your vehicle. First, if you've called AA or another roadside service, they typically can't do anything to a vehicle without the driver present. Also, roadways are very dangerous places for people on foot –particularly at night when you may not be visible.

4. Be prepared.

During these winter months it is advised that motorists carry a number of essentials in the boot of their car;

  • High visibility vest
  • Spare fuel
  • A hazard warning triangle
  • Spare wheel (Check that your spare wheel is in good condition and is fully inflated. Some cars may have an inflation repair kit instead of a spare wheel. Make sure that you know how to use it.)
  • Tow Rope
  • A shovel
  • De-icing equipment (for glass and door locks)
  • Spare bulbs
  • First aid kit
  • A fire extinguisher
  • A working torch
  • A car blanket, additional clothing & some food and water

5. Now probably isn't the time to try out your car repair skills!

If you've got some car maintenance experience, you might be able to identify a loose battery cable, but if your problem is a flat tyre and you've never changed one before, wait for assistance unless the situation becomes desperate. Changing a wheel can be tricky, even under ideal conditions but perched on the shoulder of a highway isn't what we call "ideal". If you are confident you can change a tyre, proceed with caution and if possible wait for assistance and ensure you are visible on the road side.
