Winter Car Maintenance

Although we’ve been experiencing some uncharacteristically mild Autumn weather, the Winter months are fast approaching. Don’t get caught out in the cold this year, now is the time to ensure that your car is Winter ready.

Dangers of Driving in Winter

The adverse weather conditions during Winter can put additional stress on your car. Even the most experienced of drivers can find the limited daylight and the treacherous conditions challenging. If your car currently has any underlying issues they will be amplified in the frost, ice, snow, not to mention the biblical-scale flooding we’ve experienced in recent years.

Most Common Causes of Winter Breakdown

Car Battery
The most common cause of Winter breakdown is battery fault as your car battery can quite simply, die from the cold. The drop in temperature pulls voltage from the battery making it difficult for your car to start on those wintery mornings. Therefore, now is the time to have your car battery tested and replaced it necessary to avoid a non-starter this winter.

Flood Damage
We’ve all been there, you’re approaching a flood, there’s no way to gauge the depth of the flood water but you think “Ah sure I’ll chance it”. Never chance it, flood damage can completely write off a car.

When driving in wet conditions you should only drive through flood when you are certain that the water is shallow. Once you start driving in a flood maintain a steady a slow speed and do not take your foot off the accelerator as water can get into the exhaust.

Frozen Fluids
As the temperatures drop, typically the cars fluids thicken putting additional strain on the engine and potential leading to faults. All fluids should be checked prior to the cold snap, this includes oil, antifreeze, power steering, brake and transmission fluids. Transmission fluid is of particular importance as it needs to flow quickly for the car to run, if it slows down the car will stop.

Weakened Spark Plug
As the cold temperature weaken the spark at start up, old or badly worn spark plugs are put under increasing strain. A worn-out spark plug can slowly deteriorate the ignition which ultimately affects the engine and seriously drains the car battery. It is advised to check your spark plugs in preparation for the winter months and replace if necessary.

Cold Air affects Tire Pressure
The importance of monitoring your tyres for condition, pressure and tread depth throughout winter cannot be stressed enough. Driving with unsafe tyres not only puts your life at risk, but it also endangers passengers and other road users. At least 3mm of tread is recommended for driving in winter and certainly no less that 2mm.

To summarise, here’s our winter checklist guide.

The Winter Checklist

  • Check your Fluids
  • Check your Car Battery
  • Check your Tyres
  • Check the Quality of your brakes and power steering
