5 Best Value small Hatchbacks

Posted on November 15th, 2016 at 9:00 AM

Motoring journalist and car blogger Caroline Kidd from www.changinglanes.ie has chosen her 5 best value small hatchbacks currently available in Ireland. These cars are cheap to run and easy to drive, while the space and equipment on offer make them smart buys.

1. Hyundai i20

The Hyundai i20 has neat styling and is a comfortable and competent small car. Interior space is a strong point for the i20. It’s one of the roomiest cars in its class, while a 326 litre boot is particularly generous. The 1.2-litre 75hp petrol engine is not exceptionally quick but it is quiet on the move and is cheap to run. The Deluxe model comes well equipped with alloys, keyless entry, air con, cruise control, electric windows and rear parking sensors.

Our pick: 1.2-litre 75hp Deluxe
Price: €17,495

2. Peugeot 208

The Peugeot 208 is a chic small car that’s fun to drive with a great range of petrol and diesel engines to choose from. The space inside the car is good and there are plenty of contemporary finishes in the cabin to make the 208 feel a little bit special. The 1.2-litre with 82hp is lively and fun around town, while running costs are low. Active trim is generous with equipment and features air con, alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, front electric windows, cruise control and a touchscreen infotainment system.

Our pick: 1.2-litre 82hp Active
Price: €17,745

3. Skoda Fabia

The Skoda Fabia shares much of its underpinnings with the Volkswagen Polo but it’s cheaper to buy. It’s got one of the biggest boots in this company at 330 litres and a roomy interior so it’s one of the more family friendly superminis. On the road it’s solid and predictable, and the Fabia also benefits from an extensive range of engines. The 1.0-litre 75hp is not fast but it’s adequate and cheap to run. Style models are well-equipped with alloy wheels, keyless entry, air con, electric windows, rear parking sensors and a touchscreen infotainment system.

Our pick: 1.0-litre 75hp Style
Price: €17,750

4. Suzuki Baleno

The Suzuki Baleno has extremely generous interior space and the rear legroom has to be seen to be believed. The 320 litre boot is one of the biggest in the class and it would be hard to recommend a better small family car for this money. The boon for the Baleno is its powerful but frugal 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine. There’s also a high level of standard equipment including alloys, air con, electric front windows, a touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, automatic lights, and rear privacy glass.

Our pick: 1.0-litre 110hp SZ-T
Price: €17,995

5. Opel Corsa

The Opel Corsa is very refined and comfortable for a small car and the latest model has one of the best designed interiors in the segment. Space in the cabin is good for a small hatchback, while the 285 litre boot is practical for day-to-day use. The 1.4-litre petrol engine is smooth and nippy with competitive low running costs. The SE trim includes alloy wheels, front electric windows, air con, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, a touchscreen infotainment system, and a heated steering wheel and heated front seats for those winter mornings.

Our pick: 1.4-litre 90hp SE
Price: €18,250
