4 Signs Your Brakes Need to Be Checked

If you are driving at 100 kms per hour, it will take you approximately the length of a football field (130 metres) to come to a complete stop. During winter however, the distance needed to stop your car is increased even further which means car maintenance becomes an even bigger factor in your safety. Your car’s brakes are one of its most crucial safety features, so their maintenance must never be overlooked or neglected. The following list outlines signs that your brakes need to be checked so if you notice any of these signs while driving, make sure to book a date with your mechanic.

1. Noise

If you hear screeching or grinding when you brake, it could be that you brake pads are worn and need to be replaced. The noise is caused by the underlying metal of the plate getting pushed against the metal of the wheel. Badly worn brake pads will increase the distance needed to stop your vehicle, so if you hear a noise when you apply the brake pedal, be sure to get them checked.

2. Pulling

Does your car pull to one side when the brakes are applied? If so, this is another clear sign that they need to be checked. This pulling usually means that the brakes are worn unevenly and are in need of an adjustment.

3. Pedal Problems

If your brake pedal feels “spongy” or you must apply a lot of pressure to come to a stop, it usually means that air has gotten into the brake lines. You may also be having an issue with low brake fluid. Either of these issues will increase your car’s stopping distance so make sure to resolve it quickly.

4. Vibrations

If your steering wheel, brake pedal or entire car shakes or vibrates when you apply the brakes, your brake rotors may be warped and need replacement. As you brake, you remove material not just from the pads, but from the discs as well. As rotors get thinner, they are more susceptible to warping because of the heat generated during braking. So if your brake pedal or entire car vibrates when you brake, be sure to get it checked.

During winter, you need your brakes to be in top condition. The bad weather will significantly increase your car’s stopping distance, so now is the best time to get them checked. Even if you don’t notice any of these braking issues, regular servicing will help to keep your vehicle in good condition and keep you and your passengers safe.
