Over the past 5 weeks, we have shared 10 tips on our social media to get you and your car winter ready. The aim of these tips were to give you useful advice on preparing for the winter conditions and to keep you safe on the road. With the success of these bi-weekly images, we decided to combine all the tips together into one simple article.

So without further ado, here are our top 10 tips to get your winter ready.

1. Check Your Tyre Pressure

Your tyres are your only point of contact with the road, so their condition is critical for your safety. A correctly inflated tyre improves safety, is more economical in use and is better for the environment.

2. Always Use Your Lights

In winter months, use dipped head lights during the day so you are easily seen. It is also important to do regular checks to ensure headlights and taillights are in working order.

3. Keep a Safe Distance

The distance required to stop your car is significantly increased in winter conditions, so slow down and allow extra distance between you and the car in front.

4. De-Ice A Car Lock with Hand Sanitizer

This is a very handy tip as the frosty mornings begin to set in. Keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your bag and use it to de-ice the car lock in an emergency. The heavy alcohol content breaks down ice very well and the squirt style bottles make it easy to inject the sanitizer into the lock to work its magic.

5. Top Up with Windscreen Washer Fluid

Water alone will freeze! So make sure to top up with windscreen washer fluid. Clear visibility is essential in the winter months.

6. Use Toothpaste to Clean Your Headlights

In Winter, salt and dirt from the roads can quickly build-up on your headlights, causing poor visibility. In winter visibility is very important for your safety, so this can be a useful trick. Apply toothpaste to the lights and scrub. This will restore a clear lens and improve visibility.

7. Keep Your Doors From Freezing

There’s nothing more annoying than being in a rush to get to work in the morning and your car door being frozen shut. To avoid this, spray cooking spray in the cracks of your doors and on the rubber seals. This will prevent them from freezing shut at night and save you valuable time in the morning.

8. Park Facing East

This may not always be possible but when you have the option, remember to park your car facing east. Since the sun rises in the east, it will naturally defrost your windscreen in the morning so you won’t be stuck scraping ice in the freezing cold.

9. Homemade De-Icer

No one likes scraping ice of their windscreen but de-icer products can be expensive, so why not make your own? Mix 3 parts vinegar to 1 part water and put it in a spray bottle for a handy homemade de-icer.

10. Do Not Use Cruise Control

When driving in wet conditions, turn off cruise control. If your car aquaplanes, your cruise control can make it difficult to regain control and is a lot more dangerous.

The winter period is the most dangerous time on our roads. The treacherous conditions mean poor visibility and added strain on your vehicle. Now is the best time to get your car serviced to ensure everything is in working order and to keep you safe on the road.
